Rice Soliloquy

I've never had Haitian rice until this past December.

And it's like no, no, you obviously had Haitian rice. Like you've had rice made by Haitian people.

You are Haitian. Inevitably you're making Haitian rice, but I would argue it’s Haitian styled rice.

It's this interesting… sort of homecoming in your mouth in a sort of way. It's like… a taste of home,

but this home is a home you've never been to.

And it somehow made me feel closer to it.

—----------------------------------------

(Creole Translation)

“If you knew how much I love you when you’re in front of me”

When an older adult at a Publix told me “ now we don't have a country”, my heart was broken.

After I heard that, I sat down and was thinking about a lot of things. I was thinking:

“How did things get this bad?”

“How did a country that had people who saved themselves… find themselves in a condition like this?”

In a condition where people are suffering.

A condition where people are killing one another…kidnapping people.

—----------------------------------------

They've always told me growing up, that the food in Haiti is just different

And I'm like “How? How? How is it different? What does it taste like?”.

And they're like “It’s just different”.

—----------------------------------------

(Creole Translation)

They would say “ Ahh, food was better in Haiti"

—----------------------------------------

It really is an indescribable taste that you just know the difference

—----------------------------------------

(Creole Translation)

When I sit down and think about it, we are all like a grain of rice. And when, when you have more grains of rice…more grains, more grains, more grains,

Now you have something to eat and give you strength.

—----------------------------------------

I know this is gonna sound maybe a little… strange. But I’d urge you to hear me out.

Every person is like a grain of rice. And every grain of rice is important. But without more grains of rice, you wouldn't have a meal. You wouldn't be supported. You wouldn't be fueled. But it all starts with a single grain.
